What are “Custom Design” tartans?

by Dr Nick Fiddes

Tartans described as Custom Designs in our Tartan and Fabric Finder are not officially recorded but have been informally created by users of our free online Tartan Designer facility. Please read the following points carefully before ordering a Custom Design tartan.

Unless later registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans, or recorded by the Scottish Tartans Authority, our Custom Design tartans do not carry the same degree of official recognition as historic or officially recorded tartans. This does not mean they are not legitimate. Many have been designed with great care and the same genuine intention to represent a family or other group as officially recorded tartans. But most have never been registered.

Note too that if the design’s name or description includes a clan or family name, this does not imply any claim or recognition by an official clan or family association. Nor have such designs yet been checked for potential infringement on existing official designs, though these checks will always take place prior to any actual weaving. Please note that a facility exists in the Tartan Designer facility to report any design for as ‘Inappropriate’, for investigation by the site administrators.

Also, most Custom Design tartans are purely the creative vision of their designers, and have usually had no third party or expert help with their aesthethic quality or historic relevance. Whilst many are extremely well designed, others may be less so, or may have been designed more ‘for fun’ rather than with any serious intention of weaving. If you order a fabric in any such design, you are taking your own judgement that you will enjoy owning the resulting woven product.
