Clan Stuart of Bute

Clan Stuart of Bute is a branch of Clan Stewart, one of the the largest clans in Scotland. The Stewarts acquired the Scottish throne through marriage to Robert the Bruce’s daughter and the death of Robert’s heir. Robert Stewart (Robert II of Scotland) gave the Isles of Bute, Arran and Cumbrae to his younger son, John, and combined these lands into a county of which his son was the sheriff.

In the 1400s, descendants of John Stewart were named as the keepers of Brodick Castle and the Castle of Rothesay. In the late 1500s, the family adopted the alternative spelling of ‘Stuart’ which was introduced by Mary, Queen of Scots after her time in France.

The Stuarts of Bute clan motto is "Nobilis Est Ira Leonis" (The Lion's Anger is Noble) and the clan crest is a lion rampant.
