Clan Skene
Clan Skene can be traced back to a legend from clan Robertson. As the story goes, a young son of Robertson of Straun saved the king’s life from a savage wolf using only his sgian dubh. The son, as a reward, was granted lands in Aberdeenshire, which he named after his weapon and the family subsequently took their name from their lands.
The first recorded mention of the surname "Skene" is John de Skene who was alive during the eleventh century. Despite the legend, the Skenes did not possess much prowess for battles. In 1827, the direct line of the Skene family died out, with the estate being passed onto a relative, the Earl of Fife.
The Skene clan motto is "Virtuis regia merces" (A palace the reward of bravery) and the clan crest is an arm coming through a cloud and grasping a crown made of leaves.
