Clan MacDuff

Clan MacDuff are a Lowland clan, originating from Fife on the east coast of Scotland. The early MacDuff chiefs were the Earls of Fife until the 14th century when the title transferred to the Stewarts of Albany. It was returned to the MacDuffs in 1759.

During the Scottish Wars of Independence, Duncan MacDuff - who inherited the title as an infant after the death of his father - was held captive by Edward I of England. His sister Isabella was given the role of crowning King Robert the Bruce of Scotland.

The MacDuff clan motto is "Deus juvat" (God assists) and the clan crest is a lion rampant holding a dagger.
