Clan Carnegie

The name Carnegie comes from the Gaelic 'cathair an eige', or 'fort at the gap'.

Sir Robert Carnegie of Kinnaird was appointed one of the judges of the College of Justice in 1547. The following year, he was sent to England to negotiate the random for the imprisoned Earl of Huntly, Chancellor of Scotland. He is said to be the first Carnegie to claim that his ancestors were cup bearers to the kings of Scots. The Carnegie coat of arms bears an antique cup in reference.

One of Scotland's most famous sons bears the name - Andrew Carnegie, the industrialist and philantropist who led the expansion of the US steel industry in the 19th century. Several establishments and trusts are named after him around the world.

The Carnegie clan motto is "Dred God" and the clan crest is a winged thunderbolt.
