Originally worn under the armpit, the sgian dubh came to be tucked into the garter, or hose, by way of displaying concealed weapons when entering a friend's home. This practice has lasted through the centuries, and now it is considered an essential part of highland dress. This dummy sgian dubh is made entirely from hard black plastic, with a chrome 'butt' and topaz (yellow) stone for decoration. This style is preferred when it's not suitable to wear a real bladed sgian dubh, for example when flying. |
