Fly Plaid

About

  • 100% pure new wool
  • Made in Scotland
  • Huge range of tartans available
  • The ultimate formal accessory
  • Simple and spectacular

Description

In the original highland kilt, the fly plaid was simply the end of a long piece of tartan worn over the shoulder. This modern interpretation is no less impressive, and now rather than a practical feature, it's become impressive ceremonial accessory.

Worn over the shoulder and held in place by your choice of badge, brooch or pin, the fly plaid is an accessory designed to be imposing. The fly plaid should be worn for fully formal events like weddings, clan gatherings and graduations. This length of fabric should be in the same tartan as your kilt and to create an authentic highland look, choose a Clan Crest badge to secure your plaid.

*Please note that if you choose a special weave fabric, the measurement will be 140cm x 70cm.

Where can I find more in-depth information about kilts & tartans?

Kilts and Tartan Made EasyScotweb’s MD, Dr Nicholas J Fiddes, has written a free illustrated e-book, as a gift to help kilt lovers everywhere. In simple non-technical language it covers every aspect of buying a kilt, choosing your tartan, and accessorising an outfit for every occasion.

As a Governor of the Scottish Tartans Authority, and founder of the world’s first company to market kilts on the Internet (yes, Scotweb) no one is better qualified to offer such advice. Impartial and objective, this is a personal work and is not a Scotweb publication.

Wrote... This is basically a large piece of tartan cloth, with one corner sewn a bit in to form the area in which to pin the plaid brooch. The size of the plaid is shown in the picture. Due to its size, I reckon that it will make an excellent shawl for my lady if it gets chilly for her during an event. Wonderful double functionality! Bought as part of a complete outfit which was delivered a full ten days before the initial expected dispatch date.

Wrote... Received as part of a complete outfit. Again...attention to detail in its construction. Very pleased with this plaid. The picture quality is not the best, but it does show the detail work on the fringe etc.

Wrote... My original kilt was to be in a heavier weight wooland the availability was a problem .Your customer service suggested going with a lighter wool. I added the fly and am very please with both results, the fly and the lighter more practicle weight wool. Texas can be a bit warm . Thanks for the help. D.K.Brooks P.S. I have recomended you site to several friends and just ordered a new dress sporran.

Wrote... Purchased as part of a full kilt outfit what can I say ! as was my Kilt this is a first class garment that will be a family hand me down for many a year. Made from the same ream of cloth as my kilt and stitched to fit cleanly under the jackets shoulder strap this is the part of an outfit that will finnish it off for the wow factor, and the comments you get make you know you did the right thing in getting it. I was unsure but i now know.
