This Sgarabhaig Silver Sixpence has a unique story behind it. Created by the 'Friends of Sgarabhaigh', it is the first piece of currency for the island of Sgarabhaigh in the Outer Hebrides.

The island is owned by the 'Friends of Sgarabhaigh' and a network of Associate Owners, offering each the chance to have a tangible link to Scotland, with the island intended to become a family heirloom for all its members. The project aims to conserve and share the beautiful island.

Whilst not being legal tender, the coin has been based on a coin from the reign of James I of England and VI of Scotland in 1603. It has been struck in 'fine silver' which is 99.99% pure and incorporates in its design both historic links and key features of the Friends of Sgarabhaigh project. Each coin has been assayed by the Birmingham assay office.

The coin is presented in a blue box and comes complete with a small booklet detailing the ideas behind the project and the coin.

Sixpences were in circulation for over 400 years and continue to be highly-prized. They are still used by many as a lucky token on a wedding day and so make a great idea for a wedding gift or wedding favour. The coins are also ideal as an unusual piece of silver for a special christening present.
