One of the rarest fabrics in the world, Harris Tweed is handwoven by Islanders in the Outer Hebrides off the coast of the Scottish mainland. This is the only fabric in the world to be made traditionally, in the homes of its producers, but sold and marketed worldwide on a commercial scale.

In the same way that sparkling wine is a poor imitation of champagne, your average tweed can't be compared to the quality and complexity of genuine Harris Tweed. This rare fabric is so sought after that the industry was almost ruined when the rights to the fabric were bought by a single man who, in an attempt to maximise his profits, cut off supply to everyone but himself and slashed the hundreds of tweed patterns being produced down to four.

Luckily his rights to the fabric weren't universal and the islanders began to find ways of initiating independent weaving on the islands. This means that authentic Harris Tweed is being produced again, complete with the traditional complex tweed patterns and subtle natural shades.
