The inspiration for this panel is taken from a gesso panel designed by Margaret, entitled The May Queen, which she designed as a frieze for one wall of the new 1900 extension of Miss Cranston's Ingram Street tea room in Glasgow. The opposite wall of the ladies' lunch room was decorated with a complimentary design by her husband entitled The Wassail. In the same year the Four were invited to take part in the eighth exhibition of the Vienna Secession, where they installed a room setting with the two gesso friezes taking pride of place on opposite walls.

The originals of the two panels in this collection formed the central parts of two companion pieces the Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh created as a frieze for the White Luncheon Room at Miss Cranston's Ingram Street tearoom in 1900.
