Despite our northerly location the Shetland Islands still enjoy the benefits of the warm Gulf Stream with a temperate, oceanic climate. However, very few trees are able to grow because of the strength of the cold north winds that blow over the heathery hills and lochs. These climatic conditions have created the ideal environment for the purebred Shetland sheep which have had to grow a very soft and resilient fleece to protect them from these harsh winds, and so the world renowned Shetland wool is produced.
