Tartan Searches - Near Misses

When you search for a name that does not appear with that exact spelling in our database, but there is another name with a very similar spelling, we will list this as a Near Miss. In many cases this will in effect be the same name.

Remember that surnames can be spelled in a huge variety of ways. Historically, these often belong to the same family. So do not be too concerned if our spelling differs slightly than in your branch of the family. If it sounds similar when pronounced, it is very likely to be the same family!

If in doubt, just ask our customer service team. A computer database can never be complete, and they are expertly trained to advise you about tartans that you might consider if none exists for your surname.
