Clan Strachan

The surname Strachan comes from the lands of Strathachan (or Strachan) in Kincardineshire. The earliest recording of the clan was in 1200, when the church of St Andrews was granted lands by Walderus de Stratheihen.

Despite being disinherited in 1308, after backing the Buchans and Comyns at the Battle of Inverurie, the Strachan family had regained favour with most Scottish families less than 50 years after the defeat. The clan continued to increase their popularity and, in the 1600s gained the rank of a baronet. However, this became dormant more than two centuries later, when the last Chief died without an heir.

The Strachan clan motto is "Non Timeo Sed Caveo" (I Fear Not But I Am Cautious) and the clan crest is a stag holding a thistle in its mouth.
