Kilt Belts & Buckles

by CLAN Customer Service

A belt and buckle is not strictly needed as part of a highlandwear outfit, as you kilt should stay up without it. But belts with buckles are a traditional part of the Argyll (or similar) styles of outfit, for day or semi-formal wear. Note that we would not normally wear a buckle or belt with the formal Prince Charlie jacket, as the waistcoast (vest) will not lie correctly over it.

Belts and buckles add both style and function to this classic garment. Kilts were originally designed to be worn without belts, but over time, they became an essential part of the traditional kilt outfit. In this article, we will explore the history and evolution of traditional belts and buckles for kilts, as well as the different types and styles of belts and buckles available today.

In the 19th century, when the kilt became popular with military units, belts were used to secure the kilt and hold weapons in place. Kilts were often worn on the battlefield, and the belts provided both support and a secure place to store weapons.

Over the centuries, belts and buckles for kilts have evolved in both style and function. In the 19th century, simple leather belts were common, with simple buckles made of brass or silver. These belts were functional, but not particularly stylish.

In the 20th century, however, belts and buckles for kilts became more decorative, with more intricate designs and more elaborate buckles. Today, there is a wide range of traditional belts and buckles for kilts available, from simple leather belts to more elaborate designs with intricate buckles and Celtic knotwork.

There are many different types and styles of belts and buckles for kilts, each with its own unique look and feel. The belt itself can be plain or patterned (such as Celtic knotwork) in brown or black leather. Some of the most popular types of belts and buckles for kilts include:

  • Leather Belts: Leather belts are a classic choice for kilts, and are available in a range of styles, from simple and functional to more decorative and elaborate.
  • Buckle Belts: Buckle belts are a popular choice for kilts, as they provide a secure and adjustable fit. There are many different styles of buckle belts available, from simple brass buckles to more elaborate designs with Celtic knotwork and other embellishments.
  • Celtic Knotwork Belts: Celtic knotwork belts are a popular choice for kilts, as they provide a classic and timeless look that is perfect for both formal and casual kilt wear. These belts feature intricate knotwork designs that are inspired by the ancient Celtic knotwork tradition.

The buckle may be chosen with a motif to match the Sporran and/or Sgian Dubh, such as a Thistle or Celtic design. Your choice is entirely a matter of taste, though clan members may choose to show their affiliation with a clan crested buckle (perhaps with matching kiltpin).
