by CLAN Customer Service

A number of different hats are traditionally worn with kilts and highlandwear. Some of the most common types of hats worn with kilts include:

Tam o' Shanter: This is a traditional Scottish bonnet that features a round cap and a pom-pom on top. Tam o' Shanters are typically made of wool and come in a variety of colors and tartans. They are a popular choice for casual kilt wear and are often worn with casual highlandwear.

Balmoral: The Balmoral is a traditional Scottish bonnet or beret that is characterized by its distinctive plain or Diced headband (the red and white checker board pattern at the bottom of the bonnet) often with a woollen ball on top and a bow at the back. It is typically made of wool and has a simple, round cap with a dicing pattern along the edges. Balmorals are a popular choice for formal kilt wear and are often worn with dress highlandwear.

Glengarry: The Glengarry is a traditional Scottish bonnet that is similar in style to the Tam o' Shanter. It features a round cap and a pom-pom on top, and also have a unique dicing pattern or plain band along the edges. The Glengarry is more like a U.S. military cap, with two untied ribbons at the back. Glengarries are typically made of wool and come in a variety of colors and tartans. They are a popular choice for formal kilt wear and are often worn with dress highlandwear.

Both the Glengarry and Balmoral caps have a patch, to one side, where an emblem badge (e.g. Lion Rampant or Thistle) or clan crest can be attached. Both are worn by many pipers and others, but whether you wish to wear one is largely a matter of personal taste.

Caubeen: The Caubeen is a traditional Irish bonnet that is characterized by its wide, floppy brim and its distinctive plaited band. It is typically made of wool and comes in a variety of colors and tartans. Caubeens are a popular choice in Ireland for casual kilt wear and are often worn with casual highlandwear.

Deerstalker: The Deerstalker is a traditional Scottish hunting hat that is characterized by its distinctive ear flaps and check pattern. It is typically made of wool or tweed and is a popular choice for outdoor kilt wear.

The large feather bonnet (sometimes called a bearskin) is made of ostrich feathers and is worn mainly by Pipers or perhaps Drum Majors.

These are some of the most common types of hats worn with kilts and highlandwear. The choice of hat depends on the occasion and the level of formality, and should match or coordinate with the rest of the kilt outfit. But there are also a number of modern styles of hats that are worn with kilts and highlandwear, especially for outdoor wear. Some of the most common types of modern hats worn with kilts include:

Baseball Cap: Baseball caps are a popular choice for casual kilt wear and are often worn with casual highlandwear. They come in a variety of colors and materials and can be embroidered with logos or other designs.

Newsboy Cap: The Newsboy cap is a type of flat cap that is characterized by its distinctive brim and button top.
