In the original highland kilt outfit of many centuries ago, the fly plaid was simply the end of a long piece of tartan that was worn over the shoulder. The modern version is no less impressive, however, and now rather than a practical feature it's become an impressive ceremonial accessory that should be worn for formal events such as weddings, graduations and clan gatherings.

It is worn over the shoulder and the length of tartan should be the same as your kilt. For an authentic finish, choose a badge with your clan crest to pin it in place.
